Brooklyn Historical Society

In Pursuit of Freedom features a series of 20 site-specific markers that illuminate Brooklyn’s relationship to abolitionism. At night, the markers subtly illuminate to maintain their presence while offering a connection to large immersive projections that originate from nearby lampposts. At larger-than-life-size scale, these powerful archival images allow viewers to imagine the lives and activities that once existed in the space in which they now stand. Visitors can listen to contemporary audio recordings recreated from the papers of local Brooklyn Abolitionists via embedded headphone jacks or SMS on their phone. Together the projections, site markers and audio recordings propel local history forward into the 21st century.
